Forward Counseling and Consultation (FCC) has been collaborating with healthcare workers and local hospitals since the start of the pandemic. In our collaboration, FCC soon realized the challenges for frontline healthcare workers to do their jobs and the cost the pandemic had on the system and overall mental wellness of its employees. Some of the consequences we noticed were depression, anxiety, emotional numbing and avoidance, sleep disturbance, excessive use of alcohol and interpersonal struggles. In response to this need, we created and implemented a four-part Trauma Response Group which provided information on basics of trauma, trauma reactions, techniques and interventions specifically related to their unit and profession. We piloted this group with six, high acuity units in the healthcare system while providing 1:1 mental health support offering for individuals looking for additional mental health support. FCC continues to work with healthcare workers by supporting our health system with education, support and awareness around mental wellness while working to create some shifts in improving culture in our healthcare systems one group and session at a time. If your organization would like to work towards implementing a similar model for your healthcare employees, please reach out to FCC to discuss options.
